Physiotherapy VS. Physical Therapy, What Is the Difference?

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

Physiotherapy VS. Physical Therapy, What Is the Difference?

In the world of medicine, terms are often used interchangeably. For example, the terms Physiotherapy or Physical therapy are terms that describe the same practice. A physical therapist is a common term used in some countries like the United States, Australia, etc. Other countries, such as Canada, use the term Physiotherapist.

We are going to take a look at what physiotherapy treatment is in this article to better give you an understanding of the practice. Let’s get started!

Education Requirements

The number of years of study required to be a Physiotherapist varies in each country; however, the amount of time studied generally ranges from 2 years to 5 years. A Physiotherapist usually will get a degree such as a Diploma in Physical therapy, a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, or a Master’s of Physiotherapy.

No matter where a Physiotherapist attains their degree, they must still become licensed in the Province or country that they intend on practicing Physiotherapy. In Canada, Physiotherapists must renew their licenses each year. Maintaining yearly renewals helps ensure that all Physiotherapists that are practicing are qualified to help patients.

What Does a Physiotherapist Do?

A Physical Therapist will use a manual approach or exercise base approach, active rehab, electrical modalities, or taping to treat your physical conditions. Some physiotherapists have specialized training and certification to perform acupuncture, dry needling, pelvic healthcare, spinal manipulation, vestibular rehab, and concussion rehab. With modern needs and research, Physiotherapists try to keep themselves updated to help achieve a better result for the demographic they treat.

Who Do They Treat?

Physiotherapists can treat anyone, from children to the elderly. Different patients require different treatments such as musculoskeletal, cardiovascular rehab, neurological rehab, pelvic rehab, sports injuries, postural problems, work injuries, motor vehicle injuries, pre-post-operative rehab, concussion rehab, and balance problems.

There is no one way of treating the same condition. Reputable Physiotherapists understand that each case is unique, so they will often use specialized techniques catered to the needs of the patient.
